From a Distance…

From a Distance it all Seems Quite Nice was three different artists in three different rooms of the Palace Hotel in Manchester.

A site-specific installation, staged in a room of the Palace Hotel Manchester and the hotel provides a surrogate and glamorous parallel for the faded splendor of the Victoria Baths, a disused Victorian water palace.

I used three projections, the 1st showed a women exercising against a miniature sculpture of swimming pool cubicles. The 2nd projection was a montage of swimmers projected onto the water in an old fashioned bath so that tiny swimmers appeared to be swimming across the surface of the water. Third was a projection of stills of architectural details of the baths projected onto the ceramic tiled wall of the hotel bedroom, at times the image was ceramic tiles projected onto ceramic tiles. And this projection in particular showed the parallels between the two buildings but also highlighted the dereliction of one space against the 5 star glamour of the other.

Organised as part of the MART fetsival.
