Plate 4.

Through different means I am trying to create almost realities by way of materials images and situations. I had been painting for the past two years, and in Plate 4 I attempted to reconcile this with my other practice of video and installation.

To highlight the cyclical connection between film, photography and painting, I reworked a particularly nostalgic and emotive image taken from my collection of old rose guides. I recreated a posed assemblage by literally painting (real roses) and through video I employed these painted roses as characters in a kind of narrative film, the genre somewhere between melodrama and thriller. Conversely by creating a painting of the same image, I have worked this flat image into a new reality of shape form and colour, Several people commented of this work in both its manifestations, that they could smell the roses, which is very strange when you think about it!
