Paintings

A commission for Rachel Hurdley - the image and title format, refer to colour plates from horticultural reference books, together with the specimen label. The title 'Rose of My Heart' refers to a Johnny Cash song of the same name.

From 2002 - 2009 I painted series of roses and a single chrysanthemum using old horticultural reference guides as source material for the paintings. I was interested in how these saturated colour plates in the books, sat somewhere between painting and photography. I learnt that colour printing techniques from the 1950's and later were reliant on large amounts of hand retouching and even when printing technologies had advanced and no longer required retouching, the practice continued as this was a type of image that people had come to expect.
